If you work as a Scrum Master, you've probably noticed that AI keeps coming up in team conversations. Someone asks if it can summarize retro notes. Someone else wonders if it can draft a stakeholder update. And you're left asking yourself: do I need to learn this properly?
Scrum.org now offers two certifications that speak to different sides of the Scrum Master's job: Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) and Professional Scrum Master – AI Essentials (PSM-AI Essentials). They sound similar, but they test very different things.
In this guide, the TestoMeter Edutech team breaks down what each certification covers, how the assessments work, and how to decide which one fits where you are right now. All assessment details here come from the official Scrum.org certification pages.

TL;DR:
|
PSM I is Scrum.org's foundational Scrum Master certification. According to Scrum.org, it shows you understand Scrum as described in the Scrum Guide and know how to apply it in real Scrum Teams. It also gives PSM I holders a shared vocabulary and approach to Scrum, which matters more than people expect when teams and organisations need to work together.
Scrum.org builds the assessment around three focus areas from its Professional Scrum Competencies:
PSM I suits aspiring Scrum Masters, project managers, team leads, and anyone who wants a credible way to show they understand Scrum properly, beyond the buzzwords.
PSM-AI Essentials is newer and more specific. Scrum.org describes it as validating your knowledge of applying AI as a Professional Scrum Master. That means using generative AI to support collaboration and transparency in Scrum Teams, while staying responsible and ethical about how you use it.
It isn't a data science or machine learning credential. Scrum.org groups the assessment questions into four areas:
Here's a simple example of what this looks like in practice. Say your team just finished a retrospective and you have a pile of sticky-note feedback. You could use an AI assistant to group the comments into themes and suggest a few discussion questions. But you'd still check the themes for accuracy, strip out anything confidential, and let the team decide what to act on. The AI helps with the prep work, and the judgement stays with you and the team.
The core difference is simple. PSM I tests whether you understand Scrum. PSM-AI Essentials tests whether you can apply AI sensibly within Scrum.

There's no universal answer, but there's a sensible order for most people.
If you're new to Scrum, or want to formalise what you already know, start with PSM I. It builds the foundation that everything else sits on.
If you're already working as a Scrum Master and comfortable with Scrum, PSM-AI Essentials is a natural next step. It helps you use AI tools in facilitation, communication and continuous improvement without losing sight of what Scrum asks of you.
If you're an Agile Coach or team leader, both are relevant. Scrum knowledge helps you coach teams well, and AI literacy helps you guide conversations about how your teams should (and shouldn't) use these tools.
If you're a project or delivery manager, pick based on your most pressing need today: understanding the Scrum framework, or applying AI to the work you already do.
One thing worth saying plainly: PSM-AI Essentials isn't a shortcut or a replacement for Scrum fundamentals. AI is much more useful when you already know what good Scrum looks like.
Here's what to expect from the PSM I assessment, based on Scrum.org:
Attending a course isn't mandatory, though Scrum.org strongly recommends one. Your test password doesn't expire, but it's valid for one attempt only.
A few tips for preparation:
Here's what Scrum.org publishes for PSM-AI Essentials:
Again, attending the training is highly recommended but not required. Scrum.org also notes that its training classes include a free attempt at the related certification, so check the course terms for the current details.
To prepare, get comfortable with AI basics, practise writing clear prompts, and think through real Scrum scenarios where AI could help (or cause problems). Pay special attention to data privacy, security and ethics, because these come up as their own category. Scrum.org's free Scrum Master AI Open is a good way to practise.

PSM-AI Essentials helps you:
One honest note: no certification guarantees a job, promotion or pay rise. The value comes from what you do with the knowledge and how well you can show it in your work.
Used with care, AI can take some of the busywork off your plate. Here are a few realistic examples:
Sprint Planning. AI can help tidy up draft backlog items, spot unclear user stories or suggest refinement questions. The Product Owner and team still make the planning decisions.
Daily Scrum. A tool could summarise progress notes or surface blockers people have mentioned. It shouldn't replace the conversation itself, since the Daily Scrum belongs to the Developers.
Sprint Retrospective. You can use AI to group anonymised feedback into themes and suggest discussion starters. The team should check the themes and choose what to improve.
Stakeholder updates. AI can draft a summary of progress, risks and decisions. You read it, correct it and own it before it goes anywhere.
Continuous improvement. AI can help a team explore patterns in the data they have and generate ideas worth testing. Treat the output as a starting point, not an answer.
The pattern is the same every time: AI supports, people decide.
If you're comparing training options, look beyond the certificate name. Ask about the trainer's experience, how much hands-on practice there is, how the course prepares you for the assessment, and what support you get afterwards.
Professionals in Pune and Mumbai can ask about classroom and online options, and learners elsewhere in India can explore online formats. Before you enrol, confirm the latest batch dates, delivery mode and course inclusions directly with the TestoMeter team.
1. What's the difference between PSM I and PSM-AI Essentials?
Answer: PSM I validates your understanding of Scrum and the Scrum Master accountabilities. PSM-AI Essentials validates your ability to apply AI responsibly in Scrum Master work, covering prompting, collaboration and ethical use.
2. Is PSM-AI Essentials better than PSM I?
Answer: Not really. They answer different questions. The better choice depends on your current experience and what you want to learn next.
3. Do I need PSM I before PSM-AI Essentials?
Answer: Scrum.org doesn't list PSM I as a prerequisite, and attending the training isn't required either. That said, the assessment is aimed at Scrum Masters, so a solid grounding in Scrum will make it much easier. Most people find it sensible to build Scrum fundamentals first.
4. What's the passing score for each?
Answer: 85% for both, according to Scrum.org.
5. How many questions are in each assessment?
Answer: PSM I has 80 questions and PSM-AI Essentials has 40. Both give you 60 minutes.
6. Is PSM-AI Essentials a machine learning certification?
Answer: No. It focuses on practical AI use for Scrum Masters: prompting, security and ethics, and applying AI to Scrum Team work. It doesn't cover building models or advanced data science.
7. Can I use AI during Scrum events?
Answer: It can help with preparation, summarising and brainstorming, as long as you follow your organisation's policies and protect confidential information. It shouldn't replace the team's own conversation or decision-making.
8. Do these certifications expire?
Answer: No. Scrum.org states that both are lifetime certifications with no annual renewal.
9. Where can I find PSM or PSM-AI Essentials training in Pune or Mumbai?
Answer: You can explore the programme pages on the TestoMeter website and get in touch about current batches, online options and schedules.
PSM I and PSM-AI Essentials aren't competing options. They're two different steps on the same path. PSM I helps you understand Scrum deeply, and PSM-AI Essentials helps you use modern tools without compromising what Scrum is about.
For most professionals, building the Scrum foundation first and then adding practical AI skills is a smart, steady way to grow.
